Should You Rent or Buy a Marimba?

For most students and parents, buying a marimba is the smarter financial choice. Renting typically costs $800–$1,200 per year with nothing to show for it, while a quality practice marimba, properly cared for, can be resold for close to its original purchase price. Unless your need is genuinely short-term (under six months), purchasing almost always wins.

We get asked about marimba rentals all the time. While renting might make sense for a clarinet or trumpet, we almost always tell parents and students to purchase a marimba instead of renting one. In our opinion, financing a purchase is usually a much smarter financial move than putting money into a rental agreement. "Rental credit goes toward purchase" sounds like a good deal upfront, but it typically comes with an inflated purchase price to justify the cost of the rental.

The Resale Value is Incredible

Over the past several years (as of 2025), the price of a standard 4.3 octave padouk marimba has jumped anywhere from 5% to 40% depending on the manufacturer (yes, 40%!). Because Steve Weiss Music typically sells these keyboards for less than anyone else, you can usually play a brand new marimba for a few years and sell it on the used market for very close to what you originally paid. If you rent a marimba or xylophone for just one year, you can expect to pay around $1,000. You do much better financially by purchasing it now and selling it later.

You Need It Longer Than You Think

Most marimba rentals drag on way longer than originally planned. Say you rent a marimba for your senior year of high school to prepare for a college audition. Once you get into a percussion program, you are absolutely going to need that same marimba at home to practice on during your next four years. Renting for five years makes zero financial sense. You won't "grow out" of the typical student or practice marimba like a young clarinet or trumpet player would and if it is well cared for, it should last a lifetime.

Better Gear, Better Chops

Rental instruments get beat up. The quality, tuning, and condition of a brand new marimba are going to be significantly better than an instrument that has been hauled in and out of different houses for a few decades. Developing good technique requires high-quality gear.

Top Recommendations for Student Marimbas

If you are looking for the best instruments for home practice, we consistently recommend starting with a 4.3 octave Adams Padouk Marimba or a Yamaha Padouk Marimba. They are both rock solid, sound great, and are backed by strong manufacturer warranties.

Of course, if you are looking for something specific, we stock a massive inventory of marimbas from Adams, Bergerault, Demorrow, Dynasty, Majestic, Malletech, Marimba One, Musser, Yamaha and more. We have options ranging from $1,300 practice marimbas up to $20,000 professional concert instruments.
