Billy Gladstone was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1891. He was a self-taught drummer who began playing in vaudeville shows and silent movie theaters, which were popular venues of the era. In the 1920s, Gladstone began experimenting with drum design, and in 1929, he patented a new type of snare drum that became the foundation for his Gladstone Drum Company.

The Gladstone snare drum featured a unique three way tuning design, as well as a noiseless throw-off. The three way tuning allows performers to tune the batter and resonant drum heads individually, or at the same time. These features gave drummers more precise tuning, which could be done faster than a traditional design. The drums from this time period are renown for their craftsmanship, with each one being handmade by Gladstone himself.

Gladstone's drums quickly gained a reputation for their high quality, and he began selling them to drummers across the country. However, in 1935, Gladstone suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He was forced to slow production, and his drums became increasingly rare and sought-after.

In the 1950s, a new generation of drummers discovered Gladstone's drums, and their popularity began to soar. The drums were used by some of the most influential drummers of the time, including Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Louie Bellson. The demand for Gladstone drums was so high that some drummers would even travel to Gladstone's home to purchase a drum directly from him.

More recently, New York Philharmonic percussionist Morris "Arnie" Lang produced recreations of the classic Gladstone Drums under the name Lang Percussion. Other than some modern upgrades, the drums are exact replicas of the original Gladstone design. Value for the Lang-Gladstone instruments has increased after Arnie's death in 2022.

Today, the Gladstone name is still revered in the drumming world. While the original Gladstone Drum Company is no longer in operation, vintage Gladstone drums are still highly sought-after by drummers and collectors. They remain a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Billy Gladstone, a man whose passion for drums helped shape the sound of modern drumming.
