Poor quality, poor sound

The unit I received did not meet expectations. There was a whining sound that was nearly as loud as the siren itself while cranking the handle. The mute lever did not mute the sound - it only slowed down the rotation a bit. Then the entire thing stopped working after about 5 minutes of use. I don't know if this is a basic design problem or a manufacturing defect in the particular item that I received. Either way, the quality assurance is not very good.

Jury's still out. Disappointed in the plastic construction. Sounds ok. Not sure about the durability.

Just bought this for use in Foley effects for silent film project. I remember these were hard to come by whenever someone was trying to perform anything by Varese. This Chinese made siren works well and is plenty loud.

In response to the other reviewers, the guys at Steve Weiss Music explained to me that this is a real siren, not something made just for music. The manufacturer includes the camo bag because in parts of the world this siren is used for actual military use.

The finest crank siren $60 can buy. It's working out fantastically for the recording project for which I needed it, and it is slowly finding its way into a prominent role in several other projects. I never thought I'd get so much use out of (and have so much fun with) a siren. Definitely one of the most fun instruments I own.
Also, it came with a peculiar little camouflage carrying bag. Hm.

Purchased for a sound effect in a live concert. Works fine for what it is, even though there were some sharp edges i needed to file down before use.
Would you believe the carry bag is camouflage patterned?! I'm still trying to figure that one out. It would be more professional if the bag came in black.

Exactly what I needed, for the price of $60. No way I could have afforded the full sized one, but the hand held one is very loud and so far is holding up!!!

Used for youth hockey games to cheer on the Police Cadets squirt team. The kids and even some parents loved it.

The basic siren is OK, but it's not like what is pictured. My problem is the crank. I had one for two years, and it didn't get that much use...
The crank broke right where it hinges. I noticed in the picture that there is a metal brace right where mine broke and thought that maybe they fixed the weakness.
The replacement siren broke on about the 4th crank! The handle just spins on the shaft...
I'll not buy a third to see if it gets better...

We used this for our HS MB show a few years back and it produced the perfect sound, pitch, effect!!
But beware! The handle is made of plastic and will break if dropped or revved too quickly! We went through two of them in our short 3 month season...

Not only is this siren great, but the service from this site is great too. I ordered this siren on Saturday night and this was at my door on Monday. Consider this - there's no mail on Sunday, so imagine how fast an order from this site would have arrived during the week? Overall, I'm very satisfied!

For such a light portable siren, it makes a pretty good sound, and it can be varied as well. It did come soaked in oil, which smelled pretty strong, but didn't seem to be a problem. Oh and it came in a little carry bag!!! For an air raid on the go!
Firefighters softball touenament

This siren was a big hit at our firefighters softball tournament in Hawaii. With every home run and big play the siren whaled sounding just like Yankee stadium. also I really like that its compact and collapsible for easy stowing.

I use this at my sons baseball game - plenty loud and a fraction of the cost than other stores. It is the same unit sold for twice on other sites. It is a big hit with the kids and parents. The lever allows for quickly reducing the noise.

This works great and the price was just right for a sound effect that will be used infrequently.
