Featuring 15 layers of black suede that are tightly stacked on a light-weight aluminum tube and cap, this beater produces a clean and warm tone. This beater is not a Lightweight Beater at 3.2 ounces. It also is not a soft sound that you get with the small Bop Beater that can be used for feathering, that beater is flannel. This beater is suede and added leather to it is a challenge to feather for my 52 years of playing very light 2.8 ounce beaters. Good for R&B, Funk and light rock. Not my idea of a jazz beater.
I have been playing beaters between 2.5 & 2.8 ounces for decades so I thought this would be a good alternative. I could not get the weight beforehand but bought it seeing how Dragonfly describes the beater as light-weight on an aluminum tube. In the package it's 3.5 ounces, out it's 3.2 ounces. That's not terrible but after playing for 54 years and at 66 years old now, it takes getting used to. The pedal spring needs to be adjusted for compensating feel if you are like me and have played Lowboy & SLUG beaters for years. I have written Dragonfly for their beater weights but have not heard back yet. I will post here when I receive them. In my playing experience: Cymbals, Bass Beaters and Hi Hat Clutches all need gram or ounce weights when purchasing. Don't buy blind cause you don't with drumsticks, so why do it with other instruments & tools.
