McClure-glue, tape and other adhesives-V/P - Product Information
Glue, Tape, and Other Adhesives is a piece for solo percussion written by Robert McClure. Written for vibraphone, five pitched metal pipes, snare drum, two toms, bass drum, brake drum, two wood blocks, splash cymbal and china cymbal, this work is filled with the combination of pairs of dissimilar elements. In the isorhythm an unchanging rhythm is paired with a melody that is in constant motion. The isorhythm, an element that is anchored to its process is combined with a rhapsodic, highly virtuosic percussion and later vibraphone part that plays in between (and sometimes on top of) the isorhythm. The two major sections of this piece are a pairing of disparate elements: fast and energetic combined with slow and reflective. Each pairing has some type of musical adhesive that keeps the elements from coming apart.
The isorhythm is taken through a sonic journey starting with the five pipes for the first four cycles. Then, the isorhythm is transferred to non pitched instruments. The melodic contour of the original melody is preserved when possible. It is taken by the two woodblocks and splash cymbal for one cycle each, spends two cycles in the two toms, moves to the snare drum and then the brake drum for one cycle each before being transferred back into the pitched realm at the beginning of the slow section with the bowed vibraphone. The pitches are transferred to a higher register in the vibraphone which gradually descend into the original register of the pipes where the isorhythm returns for the end of the piece. However, in this ending, some notes have fallen off. Their space is empty but still delineated, even if by there absence.
