A classic, and a great tool to get me back into Mallet playing. THX
Morris Goldenberg's Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone is arguably the most famous and widely utilized mallet percussion method book ever published. A fixture in percussion studios around the world, this comprehensive text is an absolute requirement for developing keyboard percussionists, focusing on rigorous two-mallet technique, rhythmic precision, and advanced sight-reading.
Designed to transform beginners into highly proficient readers, the book provides a systematic approach to keyboard mastery. Through a carefully graded series of exercises, students develop the muscle memory and visual tracking required for professional-level performance.
Beyond fundamental exercises, the Modern School is renowned for its collection of 39 advanced etudes located at the back of the book. These challenging solos are standard required repertoire for high school All-State bands, university admissions, and conservatory juries. Furthermore, the book includes a highly valuable section of classic orchestral excerpts, giving students direct experience with the actual parts they will encounter in professional symphonic settings.

A classic text for percussionists.
"Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone" is a must have for any percussionist that wants to develop their mallet percussion knowledge. The book has a wide variety of material. From simple exercises for beginner players, to great sight reading etudes, to challenging classical solos and a plethora of excerpts from famous orchestral pieces. Whether you are just a beginner mallet player or experienced professional you cannot go wrong with this book!
One of the older books, but it definitely teaches you all of the skills required to becoming a great mallet player. Great book to have for sure.
My band director recommended this book to start me learning some different mallet instruments. It provides a lot of good exercises and some etudes. Some of the stickings are a bit weird, but it's nothing worth deducting a point for. Overall a great purchase.
