Kentville Drums Fine Kangaroo Hide Drum Head - Product Information

Kentville Drums Kangaroo hide drum heads are suited to a variety of musical situations. They are perfect for jazz, orchestral, folk and contemporary performers seeking the raw, full-bodied, warmth that is often absent in a plastic head. The heads are easy to tune, melodic, responsive and free of troublesome overtones. Fine weight heads are approximately 8-10mil thick, which offers a great balance of sensitivity, warmth and durability.

Kentville's aim is to provide a product inspired by the sounds and traditions of the past, with the needs and desires of today's drummers kept closely in mind.

Every drum head is entirely handmade using a series of tasks and tools as old as western drums themselves. The way Kentville laps heads today is the same way they were made for the snares of the drummer boys that served in the Napoleonic wars. It's a process steeped in tradition and old world skill.

Hide selection involves discerning examination before skins are deemed suitable for drum head production. Chosen hides are then cut to size and thinned to achieve the final thickness of the heads. The precisely sized rounds are then lapped to flesh hoops, before being set on molds to dry and to form collars which allow the heads to seat comfortably.

After several days, the heads are removed from their molds. Each one is given a unique serial number and a final inspection before being sealed in a plastic sleeve to ensure it reaches its destination just as it leaves the workshop, and is not affected by any fluctuation in weather during transit.

Drum heads are lapped to aluminum flesh hoops, which provide great strength and durability.

Kentville Fine Head

Comments:

I give this tops for an animal skin snare batter. The medium sounded really nice but this one adds more sensitivity and seems to have a lot of strength to it with a nice toasty sound.

Nice alternative to calf!

Comments:

I recently set a Kentville 14" fine drumhead on a 5" Pearl Philharmonic and I'm really liking it so far. The sound is warm like calf, and feels really similar too. I live in a fairly humid climate, so it doesn't seem like the drum will maintain tension at performance pitch (I usually like B-flat for this drum), but I can just keep it lower and bring up the tension when I want to play it, like you would do for calf. Will buy again!

Articulate.

Comments:

Having played Calf, and Mule before this Kangaroo ( sound wise) seems dryer and possibly more crisp than the Calf head. It's dry, crisp, and very articulate. I tune mine med-high on a brass shell snare. Swells nicely, good buzz rolls and as for mine, there's a thinner area near my hoop that produces a very clean ring, pleasant surprise. Rim shots a loud and cut, and the center of the head is dry and produces no overtones. Just a dry crack ( (5.5x14 black beauty) I really enjoy this head...but a mule skin is still my favorite. This will and has replaced my calf skin. My two cents-

Pretty Awesome

Comments:

Put this on a 6.5" Maple philharmonic. It's a killer sound. Not as finicky as people make it sound. The attack is a little emphasized. Sort of like the cardboard box attack some people associate with old baseball bat edges, but more musical. More sensitive as well. Fuller sound with less effort. I'm all about this head right now. It even came to me with a pretty mangled collar (SW likes to crush drumheads), but everything's working fine so far.

Love the 'roo heads

Comments:

I consider the fine grade Kentville Kangaroo drum head the best sounding drum head for concert snares played in concert halls. These Kentville heads maintain the great crack you need to cut through the string ensemble I play with even at pianissimo volume, but with a richer, darker sound that you get from artificial heads. I am currently using this head on a 13"x4" Remo Philharmonic Maple snare, but also have the same head on my larger concert brass snare drums. Yes, the natural heads must be tuned more and are certainly more expensive, but they last a long time and will produce, IMO, the best concert sound you can get from a snare drum.
