I played the first movement of this piece for my high school concerto competition, and I think it's a great choice. It fits on a 4.3 octave marimba, and is less difficult than the majority of marimba concertos. But it is still very difficult, utilizing very fast 16th note runs for a large portion of the piece. Two sections of the piece are identical except for the fact that the sub-sections are reversed in order and the sections are in different keys. It's easy to play parts from the wrong section because of this. And there are a lot of notes to learn. An advanced college/professional player could probably learn this in about a month, and an advanced high school player could learn this in two or three months. I found the music catchy, exciting, and a good challenge. I gave this a four because the piano reduction is hand-written and difficult to read, and because rolls are notated only as "leg.", causing some confusion. But otherwise it's a great piece.
Very difficult for the marimbist and pianist. The fist movement is a good piece in itself. The second is beautiful in an "eye of the beholder" kind of way. The third movement leaps up and down unceasingly and drives to the end like nothing else. Perfect for a senior recital if you dare.
