Andrew Thomas, born 1939 in Ithaca, New York, is a successful composer, pianist, and conductor who has written several marimba works for William Moersch, including this one entitled Merlin .The harmonies are tonal and the sound of the music is pleasant. The piece was inspried by Edwin Arlington Robinson's poem of the same name. the first movement - entitled "Beyond the Faint Edge of the World" - is about when Sir Gawain is approaching Camelot and looking for his first glimpse of the battle at the castle. The mysterious mood of the music reflects the anxiousness of the poem.
Movement two is entitled "Time's Way" is much more chaotic and frantic, depicting a scene of the poem about the downfall of man's concept of order. A great marimba solo for the advanced player. Difficulty: Grade 6 for solo marimba
