Description

A comprehensive and deeply musical collection of exercises and etudes for the serious timpani student, The Artist Timpanist was written by Duncan Patton, Principal Timpanist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for over 30 years, and a long-time teacher at the Manhattan School of Music. Here he distills a lifetime of experience and wisdom into a method, which will prepare an aspiring timpanist for any challenge.
The technical portion of the book progresses from the basics of a legato stroke all the way through complex pedaling exercises. 40 full-length etudes cover an enormous range of styles, from the classical era through various "dance" styles to a variety of 20th and 21st century techniques. Information on mallet selection and instrument maintenance is included as well. This book sets a new standard for a sophisticated approach to timpani study.

This is one of the best books you can buy for timpani. Goes in-depth about timpani technique that will help you improve, and has a wealth of very well-composed etudes. This book also manages to feel up-to-date and does not treat the reader like an idiot. 10/10, would recommend this book 100%

Make Mr. Patton's book part of your library, period. You will not find a better encapsulation of technique, musicianship, and compositional excellence than you find in The Artist Timpanist.

I thought this book would be around 20-25 pages of tips and tricks for playing timpani. In reality it is over 100 pages of lessons and orchestral/practice excerpts for you to practice tuning all the way you pedal changing on the fly to different types of strokes and styles of playing. A heads up however, if you don't play American Style timpani, it is still a great book for you, just a little harder to read the music.

There are a lot of great resources for timpani, but this book brings it all together and makes every other resource better. Patton does this by applying a very thoughtful vocabulary to the ideas in the book, and pairs each idea with short example etudes to get it in your hands and ears. This book transformed my perspective on playing timpani, and instantly elevated both my playing and listening skills. Absolutely recommended.
