Description
Percussion, dated October-December 1935, is the second of eight known percussion ensemble works composed by Johanna Magdalena Beyer. Scored for 9 players with no specific instrumentation indicated. The fourth movement of Percussion was Beyer's only composition to be published during her lifetime. It was published in Henry Cowell's New Music Editions, Orchestra Series Collection No. 18 in 1936 and has until present been misunderstood as a complete free-standing composition. The first and third movements of Percussion were among the few works to receive public performances during Beyer's lifetime. The first known complete performance of Percussion was presented in Carbondale, IL on April 3, 2011 by the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Percussion Group (SIUCPG).
