Wilcoxon-Modern Rudimental Swing Solos

Comments:

A fun and challenging book for the novice or more experienced drummer. Explanation of rudiments and some of their variations in the beginning of the book. Some solos require use of bass drum and toms or acc. instruments. You can see why Wilcoxon's All American Drummer and Modern Rudimental Swing Solos were/and are still popular.

Great Company and book!

Comments:

Firstly, the shipping was fast, I got my book faster than I expected! Secondly, this is a legendary book. Written in the 40's, all the jazz greats would study out of this and actually practice the solos in this book before their gigs! Must have for anyone trying to level up their drumming.

A must have

Comments:

I hate practicing rudiments, but the solos in this book are extremely challenging, fun to learn and offer a musical and jazz oriented approach to the rudiments. Included in the front is a list of the rudiments and exercises. As a jazz drummer, I find it more relevant to my playing than sitting in front of a click doing double strokes.

Interesting book to study. The studies are short, and all are based on rudiments.

All American Drummer

Comments:

As a student of Charley Willcoxon many years ago, I can attest to his excellence as a teacher. When I first went to him, he refused to teach me unless I started from the beginning basically "checking" the strokes on the page, especially the accented beat of a flam. That accent, as in left/RIGHT, that is the right stick, could not be allowed to rebound higher than 1/2 inch or so.......Whenever Buddy Rich or Joe Morello would come into town ( Cleveland), they would visit him and take a lesson. He was very much into "form." A great man. best, Angelo Mauceri. My core teacher was Robert Pangborn of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Advanced Swing Solos

Comments:

"Advanced Swing Solos for the Modern Drummer" is, without question, one of the finest books on snare drum rudiments ever published. For those drummers interested in playing jazz, the book is essential. This book was studied by jazz greats Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones. Why the Wilcoxon book? Because it teaches the student how to phrase with rudiments. It's not enough to just learn rudiments; Wilcoxon teaches the student how to apply them, in their various incarnations. Further, "Advanced Swing Solos" teaches the student how to shift the accents around, to syncopate them. Anyone who wants to learn how to apply rudiments in a musical fashion, can benefit greatly from studying this book.

A Must Have

Comments:

This was a "must have" required book studying with John Roland from the Bflo Philharmonic. Rudiments can be FUN. With Ubangi Serenade (dedicated to Wilcoxen's old friend Gene Krupa) you get a taste of the Krupa paradiddle flavor and tom-tom expressions. This book had an immediate impact on my young playing. Reading is fairly easy to intermediate and as I said...a whole lot of fun. In no time you will be chomping your gum to Benny Goodman and "swinging" you rudiments like a hep-cat instead of marching in the parade. BUY IT!!!! The SakDaddy says so!
