Getting Started With Rototoms

Often synonymous with the look and sounds of the 80's, Rototoms are a budget friendly way to add a drum with a wide tuning range to your setup or collection. Popularized by many drumming greats of the early progressive rock era, these drums were used by drumming legends Bill Bruford, Terry Bozzio, and more. Their application across a range of styles is also evident in their use within the classical repertoire as well, such as the William Kraft Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra.

How They Work

Rototoms are known for their simple tuning adjustment, as their tension is directly correlated to their threaded mounting rod. By spinning the drum to right (adding tension) or to the left (easing tension) the pitch of the drum will increase or decrease accordingly. This process adds an even tuning across the drumhead, but can also be cleared or fine tuned with a drum key similarly to timpani.

What is Included?

When you purchase Weiss Rototoms included are the rototoms themselves (including heads), as well as all mounting hardware, and a Liberty One double braced stand. After assembly, your new rototoms will be ready to add on to your drum kit, or percussion set up.

Application and use

The rototom is a great option for both expanding the drum kit, or for use within a multi-percussion set up. Given the tunable nature of the rototom, it can not only be easily adjusted, but can be tuned easily to specific pitches. This makes it a great concert tom, or option to get an exact tuning for a specific moment. Given the fact that rototoms do not have a resonant head, they offer an alternative sound to the traditional concert tom, with an added range of musical options.

Recap

Rototoms can be a great option for anyone looking to expand their percussive sound palate. From a broad tuning range, to their light weight and simple design, it is no wonder there has been a recent resurgence in their popularity.
