Description
Early rudimental drumming was used for communication. During the Revolutionary War musical motives most often played by the snare drum would signal troop movements and instructions. The piece is based on a rhythmic motive that is played as the drum major gives his mace command to halt the band from marching. The snare drummer playing a stick tap will play this rhythm as the group halts to coincide with the four mace movements. A modified version of this rhythm is the first measure of the piece in the player three part.
