Description

Rolling is the way that the timpanist sustains a pitch. The objective is to play single strokes so smoothly that the individual strokes are not heard. The player creates a continuous hum.

All of the exercises in this book are 12 bars long and are to be played 10 times in a row. There are some suggested dynamics, but the performer should vary dynamics and tempo to suit your individual needs. Be as creative as possible.

Enjoy the exercises and happy rolling.

I entered grad school in the early 2000s and had the fortune of being able to study with Tim Adams at a summer festival. This is the book I've waited for for 20 years. Just like in lessons, he gets right to the heart of the most difficult musical challenges that face the timpanist. I am a Percussionist most of the time, but this book got me in shape to play with authority in no time. Get it, get it, get it!
