Albeniz-Sevilla arr. Bastian (SP)-4M

Sevilla is part of Isaac Albeniz's Suite Espanola, written in 1887, and is inspired by the Sevillana music of that region. Sevillanas are typically in triple meter and played for dancing and celebration. The musical material is influenced by Flamenco and has a driving sense of rhythm.

The form of this piece is an ABA form, with a fast A section and slower B section. The opening section is lively and bright, with simple folk-like melodies. The middle section contains long melismatic phrases, like the “cante libre” vocalizations of Spanish singers. The stark contrast of the sections evokes a range of emotions, from playfulness to pensiveness, and from joy to longing. The music has a nostalgic feel to it as it depicts a deep Spanish culture.
