Description

Katalog IV by Wilfried Hiller is a quartet for percussion ensemble. This piece is the fourth in a series of five "Katalog" pieces by Hiller. The movements entitled "Quadrat" were inspired by the magic square in Albrecht Durer's engraving "Melencolia I". The Quadrat shows sixteen figures. By adding the figures up along all their horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines, their total will always be 34. The sum of the corner as well as the inner figures will also be 34. In these compositions, each figure has been assigned its own characteristic timbre.

Instrumentation:

Percussion 1 - Xylophone, Small Finger Cymbals (pitched F#, A, Bb, C, C#, D), 2 Dobachi (Japanese temple bells), Tubular Wood Drum, Temple Blocks, Bamboo Stick, Tam-tam (medium), cowbell, angklung (high)
