Description
Concerto for Doumbek and Soundscape by Evan Gottschalk was inspired by the interesting world of Middle Eastern Music. The three-movement concerto is written for doumbek, the ubiquitous Middle Eastern goblet drum, with an electronically composed accompaniment. The first movement is based on a traditional rhythm called the Malfuuf, and is performed using two doumbeks. The second movement is based on Indian rhythm cycles, and consists of sounds that continue throughout in different time signatures. The third movement is a fast-paced percussive-driven race to the end that displays the technical ability of the performer. All movements are to be played in an improvised manner using the written notation only as a fundamental road map. It is recommended that the performer amplify the doumbeks in order to blend and balance with the electronic soundscape effectively.
Instrumentation:
one large doumbek on stand, one smaller doumbek held traditionally, one large or medium doumbek with natural skin head, one standard size doumbek
