Description
Continuum (revised version) by Daniel Kessner is a four mallet solo scored for 4.5 octave marimba (low F). The central idea behind Continuum is to present a work of relatively large form, four movements and a recurring refrain, with no pauses or breaks between movements, for page turns, or even mallet changes, a smooth continuum of sounds, moods, and tempi. The minimum requirement is a 4.3 octave marimba, however a low F marimba is preferred.
The first movement was rewritten by Karen Ervin Pershing in 2002. "With this new edition I feel I have done justice to the original idea of the piece. It is still not an easy piece, but I believe it is now much more reasonable and, more importantly, musically much more effective and compelling." - Daniel Kessner
