This mallet is marketed for "large nipple gongs," but it's much more versatile than that. It's actually our most frequently-used mallet in the symphony. It punches above its weight as a general tam-tam mallet, but it particularly excels at low dynamics. Too often, tam-tam mallets heavy enough to excite medium-to-large tam-tams are hard to control at softer dynamics or don't provide enough articulation. We've found this mallet is perfect for such scenarios. Be advised there seems to be variability in the way this mallet is constructed. As of the time of writing, the photo shown on Steve Weiss differs from the photo shown on Dragonfly's website, and neither of them reflect the product I received. My mallet has a wood handle, whereas I expected a metal handle. I'm sure they were careful to make sure the weight and balance were the same, and I do love the mallet, I was just surprised.
