Description

According to a local ordinance, the blind "carillon player" of Utrecht Cathedral and St. Jan's, Jacob van Eyck (1590-1657) occasionally entertained strollers through St. Jan's Churchyard on his flute. Highly imaginative as a composer, Jacob van Eyck wrote two albums for recorder entitled "Der Fluyten Lusthof". The contents comprise psalm tunes, folk songs, and dance tunes extended by variations.

Selection has been governed by the difficulties encountered by mallet players, especially beginners, as regards the absence of dynamics and directions for performance. The restricted compass enables the pieces to be played on the xylophone and marimba as well as the chimes and vibraphone.
