I enjoy the tone of my Epstein Castanets so when I needed to incorporated castanets into my recent pit orchestra set up I chose to spend the money and purchase the Epstein Castanet Playing Machine. The look is elegant, but the function left much to be desired. Fortunately I did not notice as much dampening as I had anticipated, but there are some drawbacks. In the machine the castanets are angled down which make them more difficult to play. The plastic strews do leave marks on the lacquered handles and the threads on one side are so tight that I can only tighten it with pliers which makes adjustments very difficult and I fear that the screw will eventually snap of inside the threads and I will have more problems. Unfortunately this machine is the only option for these instruments. I sincerely intend on purchasing another set of castanets soon so that I can take advantage of some of the new and better options now available.
