Description

Twelve by Eric Guinivan is a progressively fast-paced study in development and crescendo. Scored for twelve drums, two tam-tams, and two bells, Twelve begins with a very simple rhythmic idea that is elaborated, developed and layered through a variety of textures and tempos while maintaining a gradual accelerando and crescendo throughout. As the piece reaches the moment of highest intensity, the key rhythmic elements begin to unfold in reverse as the tempo becomes even quicker!

Duration: ca. 12' 46"

Difficulty - college/professional.

This work for percussion duo is absolutely a must for any college or professional group looking to program a very dynamic and impressive multiple percussion duet. The entire 12 minute work builds with intensity from its soft and subtle opening to the final bombastic finish. It's not only a great piece of serious concert music, but also extremely fun to play and very accessible to audiences of all ages.

Eric Guinivan is a very talented young composer, and "Twelve" is one of his many great pieces. The use of rhythmic cadences give the piece a sophisticated edge that is lost with many percussion duets. The high energy drumming and interesting meter changes make this piece a lot of fun to play and I recommend it to anyone at a high performing level. "Twelve" is a percussion duet that is fun as well as challenging to both players. Intended for advanced high school, college or professionals. Composer Eric Guinivan does a fantastic job of creating a piece that is both exciting and musically rewarding. I have performed this piece twice and have had wonderful experiences both times. The use of two ship bells mixed with various drums creates some wonderful effects. I highly recommend this piece for percussion ensemble concerts, recitals or just for fun!
