The right sound I was looking for.
The 10mil Strata 1000 yields a darker timbre and warm tone that resembles slightly thicker calfskin heads. Sensitive enough for delicate playing, it can also project when necessary. A 2mil overtone control ring increases articulation and focus.

The right sound I was looking for.
I use Evans heads on all of my drums, finding their quality and consistency to be first rate. This particular model I mounted to my Premier 6" steel concert snare drum, with an Evans snare side head and a new set of Grover SX snares. I tuned the batter head to a Bb, and then the snare head a bit higher. This gives me a great articulate sound at all dynamic levels, with just a bit of ping which I dampen with a Black Swamp batter head mute. On wooden drums, you will probably not need the additional external mute, but this steel drum is very lively (but only cost me $75 on ebay). Although it sounds strange at this tension, I can really feel the elasticity of this head, and it is very comfortable to hit, not nearly as rigid feeling as a two-ply set-up or heavier film thickness. One other feature that is great is that you can use a sharpie to mark the underside of this head for young students to show them the correct playing area, and because it is pretty transparent, they can see it easily.
I use this with my Canopus 1ply Maple, feels like reborn for my snare drum. All the dynamic present properly. And I like its darker and shorter tone than remo. Price is really attractive for a concert snare drum head.
This is truly a fantastic head! The articulation really cuts through at any dynamic level. Should keep the player happy for a long time!
