Description

Evergreen by Benjamin Finley is a four mallet solo scored for 5 octave marimba. This piece is a memorial written for Finley's close friend Ryan Camden. This beautiful and haunting piece requires strength in musicality as well as technique. Rapid mallet permutations, mixed time signatures, and the opportunity to explore a myriad of roll techniques make this a great vehicle for virtuosic solo expression. Duration: 6'37"

I stumbled across this piece on my many YouTube searches. It caught my interest right away. The piece is very beautiful and does demand a lot of technicality. I have to say I learned a lot from playing this piece. My technique has improved significantly and there is a good mixture of things to learn and improve on. The piece also calls for ones own musical interpretation and it's pretty cool. I would highly recommend this piece. I played it for my junior recital and people were moved by the piece and it really brings out the beauty of the marimba!

Don't let the difficulty level fool you--this piece is very challenging to completely master (even the composer's performance of the piece has many mistakes). Placed in the right (and experienced) hands, it can be a very beautiful piece of music that reveals the beauty of the marimba in every register. It is one of the few marimba works that is a perfect hybridization of beauty and virtuosity.
