Spencer-Everybody Talk About Freedom-M/VX

Everybody Talk About Freedom by Julie Spencer is a four mallet rap song for 5 octave marimba. Rock'n Roll back beats, blues riffs and funky bass drive the music under the rap lyrics. Commissioned by Canadian percussionist Beverley Johnston, it is for prepared marimba and rhythmic spoken text. Aluminum foil strips cover the bars of the marimba, creating a sound reminiscent of electric guitar distortion. The lyrics talk about political and personal freedom from the perspective of brave women, men, and children making sacrifices for the sake of their rights. This piece is inspired by their courage and dedicated to the power of free speech.
