Family Portraits: Cubba (grandfather) by Stuart Saunders Smith for trumpet, flute, and 5 percussionists (each playing two low drums and two triangles). Family Portraits is an ever-growing collection of musical portraits. Each portrait captures in sound something of the character and personality of that particular family member. Cubba is a portrait of Cubba's emotional interior. The trumpet player is Cubba - a lyrical solo seething with unresolved violence, accompanied by tom-toms which seem to urge him on. About 2/3 of the way through the piece, triangle music is added as Cubba is joined by his first wife, represented by the flute music. All five percussionists play just triangles as they both ascend to heaven.
