Written as a "set piece" for the International Competition for Percussion Instruments (PENDIM 2009/Plovdin, Bulgaria), Martin Georgiev's Apocalyptic Passacaglia on a Theme by John Cage is a challenging work scored for solo snare drum and videoscape. Inspired by the musical work of John Cage and the artist Lucio Fontana, as well as contemporary geo-political events, the performer must weave his/her way through a variety of metric schemes and tonal manipulations on the snare drum that are coupled with vivid and sometimes shocking images of conflict and upheaval in our modern world. Juxtaposed against this tension is a brief "prayer" in Latin, spoken by the performer. The performer must utilize headphones/earpiece to hear the "click track" to which the video images are coordinated.
