Description

Within the series of my rhythm pieces (darabukka for piano or morning song for large orchestra), the composition for snare drum is a counterpart. The moment of tension: pitch instruments are treated like rhythm instruments. Instead of this inner contrast, the tension of the various uses of the drum is replaced by a relatively large number of constant treatment elements. Although developed only at the beginning of the 19th century, the small drum can be seen within an old and multi-layered drum culture. Different sides of the richness of this culture, regarding social use as well as diversity of playing technique and expression, form the basis of compositional technology. However, this not in a merely citing manner - that would be unhistorical.
-Nicolaus A. Huber, 1978
