Description
Composer Arkadiusz Katny says of his 5 octave marimba solo Ypsilon:
The formal morphology of the composition is not defined a priori, on the contrary, it is the result of a perpetual, dynamic process of creation. Its continuum is maintained by a sequence of two motifs whose formative roles proceed on different levels. Each of them undergoes various metamorphoses, whereas together they are subjected to sophisticated processes of aggregation, where the arisal characteristic "musical theme" referring to the letter "Y" crowns it all. the selection of the sound material for both of the motifs was determined by application of the Pathopoe-an emphatic rhetoric figure; this endeavour is a conscious reference to the musical rhetorics shaped in Baroque. All the piece is set in a chromatic melodious quasi-line, a few rhythmic modules and interval or quasi-accord structures.
