Description

Stories for Snare Drum: Volume I The Inventors is a beginning to intermediate snare book. It chronicles fifty important inventors from Archimedes to Steve Jobs. For each inventor there is biographical information along with a motif in section I, short exercises and concept explanations in section II, and section III is the etude, called The Story.

A story has three parts: a beginning, a middle and an ending. It also needs a character. In each etude, or story in this book, the main character is the inventor.

In Part One, called The Person, there are a few facts listed about each inventor. These are also facts that the player can use to fill out the parts of the story. These are not all of the facts about each person, but are some of the most important.

Part Two is called The Setting. This is where the student is given some short exercises to work rudiments, rolls and rhythms. The student is encouraged to go back and work section II for different inventors, as these will continue to develop technique.

Part Three is The Story. This is an etude that incorporates the inventor's motif and often ideas from section II. As previously mentioned, this is where the student can imagine that they are playing the story of the composer and use the facts listed in part one to make their playing more descriptive and emotional. This is where the actual story is told.
