The series entitled ''Brazilian Instruments and Rhythms'' by Vina Lacerda is a research that aims at disseminating Brazilian cultural musical goods and values by teaching Brazilian instruments and rhythms. This first volume is focused on percussion instruments and contains a group of instruments used in the musical environment of choro, samba, and subgenres. Conceived as a didactic booklet and DVD, the material presents a series of instruments, their essential rhythmic patterns and their applications in different styles and instrument sections. The following instruments are studied in this volume: pandeiro, tamborim, agogô, ganzá, prato e faca, cuíca, rebolo, repique de anel, repique de mão, repenique, caixa, tarol, tantã, palmas, berimbau, surdo, reco-reco de mola, reco-reco de bambu, atabaque, and frigideira. Each instrument is introduced both separately and as a group, providing to students a greater understanding of the language and polyphonies used in the playing of samba, samba de partido alto, samba de roda, samba chula, samba batucada, choro, and maxixe. With more than a hundred videos, scores, historical information, techniques, curiosities, and tips, this material intends to be one more source of information for the studying and learning of the Brazilian music.
