Description

"Trio N'Orleans is a fun and challenging drum piece based in part on New Orleans second line drumming rhythms and grooves. I have drawn inspiration from the drumming of Bernard Purdy, Stanton Moore, Johnny Vidacovich and others. The opening section should be swung in the same tradition as second line drumming. Finding the right character to the opening groove, i.e. "playing in the cracks" between straight and swung eighths is encouraged and should be experimented with.

Starting in bar 32 the piece begins to change rhythmic character, switching to a straight eighth feel and continues to move through several other feels and grooves before it comes to an exciting and fast paced finale.

The piece includes sections that have the players moving between each other's setups (stations) and playing on each other's instruments. It also has sections were the players remain at their original stations but play on their neighbors instruments. Smooth execution of these proposed maneuvers will take careful planning and practice. The goal is to maintain the smoothness of the groove throughout as well as making the movements visually fun and exciting. Directions are included in each player's part."
