Nicholas Lawrence was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the suburbs. His earliest musical experiences were singing in church choirs, playing handbells and a brief study of piano. He wrote his first song at the age of eight, but did not begin composing regularly until age thirteen. Around this time he began formal training in percussion performance. He later studied music composition formally at the University of North Texas and the University of Southern California.
