Description
Concerto for Marimba and Four Percussionists by Chihchun Chi-sun Lee.
This piece was commissioned by Robert McCormick and the USF Percussion Ensemble. Lee's philosophy was to explore the many different timbral possibilities of solo marimba, especially in correspondence with other percussion instruments - albeit those that are pitched, unpitched, microtonal, metal, membrane, glass, wood, etc. The work contains three movements, each featuring a different concept of percussive materials.
Instrumentation:
Marimba Solo (5-Octave Marimba)
Percussion 1 - vibraphone, 3 Chinese drums, 5 temple blocks
Percussion 2 - tubular bells, 5 hanging bottles, 5 boo bams (or tomtoms), high octave crotales
Percussion 3 - metal wind chimes, ocean drum, congas, bongos, 5 cowbells, 12" roto tom
Percussion 4 - bowl gong, Chinese tam tam, 26" timpani, 2 slit drums, 5 woodblocks, small cymbal
