Description

This dark and aggressive arrangement for 13 players focuses on the coloristic aspects of a percussion ensemble. This is done through utilizing highly controlled orchestration and various unique and extended techniques including a "slap cluster" (a slap stick laid across the damper of a vibraphone that plays the entire instrument at once), chime glissando, playing on the strings of the piano, precise dampening in the metallic instruments, limited and controlled use of the tremolo within the marimba section, specified use of fan speed in the vibraphones, and highly controlled indications for mallet choices, exemplified within the "articulation progression" section. For those people not fond of making their audiences wait through extended stage setup, "Lift Up. . ." makes a great companion piece for other large percussion orchestra pieces such as Gillingham's "Stained Glass".

Arranged by Peter Saleh, "Lift Up My Hands To You" by Da Jeong Choi was originally written for piano for four hands. This score was premiered by the University of North Texas, conducted by the arranger in 2005 and has since been conducted by noted percussionists Gordon Stout, Mark Ford, She-e Wu, and Eric Willie, among many others.
