Description

Hard. Model DS18 is a medium weight mallet designed for maximum “cutting power” in both amplified and acoustic group performance situations.

The original Dave Samuels DS11 and DS18 mallets have a unique small bronze core that increases the mass of the rubber head and “kicks-in” at high dynamic levels for even greater projection. They are medium weight mallets with medium thick rattan handles.

Just exactly the mallet I needed

My band has been playing a lot of outdoor gigs recently and I found that for my vibes to be heard (they're not mic'd), I needed a harder mallet to have the attack of notes be heard by the audience. I looked for a mallet branded by a player I admire and found this Dave Samuels model. These will do what I need.

Hits Hard, Too Flexible

These do a good job of creating a very hard, bright sound, but the rattan shaft is a little too flexible which affects my accuracy. I WANT to like them but they just aren't working out for me. So, sadly, they're going to sit at home in favor of other options.

I like these mallets. They are hard and bright as described. I have an older set of the DS11 which I love, but needed something harder and brighter to cut through. They are a little heavier than the older version but still good nonetheless. They have a stronger bite when you dig in and clear articulation at soft and medium dynamics.

Disappointed

Disappointed that this line of mallets has switched to much thinner shafts than previously. Had to apply multiple layers of grips to meet my needs. Working fine now; do like the hard heads.

Top Notch

These are just top notch! Mine have lasted me two years and are still holding strong. You can get clear articulation when needed, and you can still have a warm and sweet sound. Even on the marimba it has a substantial sound, though use with caution on the low end of a 5 octave marimba. Perfect for players who use stevens and burton techniques.
