Matsushita-Optical Time-5T

Optical Time for Timpani by Isao Matsushita was originally composed in 1987 for Shinti Ueno. The composer has tried to create a way of making sounds seem visible through the use of a single instrument. Through the use of pedals, the full range of the timpani is explored in this piece. The performer creates the appearance of "optical time" not only with his hands and his sticks, but with his feet and pedaling techniques as well.
