Description
The Key was composed by Valarie Morris for virtuosos John Graham (viola) and Alan Zimmerman (percussion). The first movement, The Key, explores the newly discovered key with excitement and anticipation. The second movement, Lock, expresses unfortunate realizations. The third movement, Unlock, begins with an air of disbelief and continues with understandings of new opportunities.
Viola effects include ricochet, playing behind the bridge, and saltando to highlight the various moods and emotions of the composition.
Vibraphone is complemented with sleigh bells, a mixed set of 5 wood, metal and skin sounds, timpano, crotales, Japanese rin/cup gongs, friction drum, and flexatone. A detailed legend shows the suggested setup.
