It's hard to strike a good balance between groove and beef. On one side accented 2 and 4 on the snare gets cheesy after a few bars, but on the other side playing all-beef usually results in a lack of groove. So it's cool to see the sheet music for these pieces, but overall I'm not feeling most of the music in here. There's just not enough groove. The Blue Knights 2000 and Blue Coats 2004 cadences were the best of the bunch. Check out the audio demos on RowLoff before you pick this one up. Many of them can be found on YouTube performed by the groups as well. The first ...on the road book (green one) is much better. As a gauge of where I'm coming from when it comes to groove vs thrown together licks Madison Scouts 2000 is a great funky cadence that's both funky and beefy. Madison Scouts 2002 however, is almost formless with no groove, just patterns, and beef. Speaking of Scouts 2000, they somehow managed to skip that one in both books providing the 1999 and 2002 cadences, but not 2000. Would be cool to see MS2000 in book 3 ...on the road yet again, the redemption.
