"Primordial Variations" was composed in 1998 and dedicated to Christopher Lamb. Patton utilizes many textures and timbres that highlight the musical characteristics of the marimba and timpani. Each instrument has extended solos sections that feature passages of a technical nature.

Duncan Patton is a Principal Timpanist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and Co-Chair of the Percussion Department at the Manhattan School of Music. Prior to joining the Met, he was Principal Timpanist of the Honolulu Symphony. A composer of works primarily for percussion, his music has been performed in New York, throughout the U.S., Mexico City and Tokyo. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music.
