This snare is amazing for the price! I thought this was the best sounding steel snare I had heard until getting into the $800 - $1K range. It was beautiful out of the box with solid untouched chrome. Great crack on it, and the internal muffler gets rid of any ringing you don't want without choking the snare. The muffler can be easily adjusted if you want a little more buzz, or you can take it completely down and loosen your snare wires to give you an old school feel. I play mid-high tuning on the top head with the bottom head cranked, so I can't say how it responds with low tuning. I also changed the snare wires to the Canopus 30 strand back beat wires, but you can get a similar sound adjusting the muffler right. The lock rings that everyone complains about aren't really an issue unless you are changing your tuning a lot and need to do it quickly. They can be easily removed by taking the head off, and Canopus makes leather lock washers that are supposed to be awesome if you're having de-tuning issues. I kept the stock ambassador heads on for now, and I'll probably go with an emperor or power stroke on top once it wears out to give it a little more warmth, but it sounds amazing with the ambassador too!
