It did not work, I had to take it apart, and smash the leather plug to compress the air better, and lub it before I could make it work. No instructions of any kind came with it. ..however, after I worked on it, it did work about 7 out of 10 times
This was exactly the effect that I needed. The first time I used it in the orchestra pit. The conductor laughed so hard he had to quit conducting. I'm really glad I stumbled across this site and will continue to use it for my percussion needs.
This pop gun is completely unreliable. It makes a 'pop' maybe every second or third (or fourth) attempt, and I was unable to get it to pop twice in a row. I bought it so that I could make one pop in each evening's performance, but it doesn't appear it can do that.
With the cork pushed in as far as it was when it comes from the factory, it may or may not pop on demand. With the cork pushed in about 4mm (1/8") less it works reliably. But be careful! Don't push the cork in all the way to the indentation. Leave a gap..
Thisw is the one, THAT sound. It absolutely nails it. It's also a beautiful, ergonomic object, a joy to play. Maintenance note- mine arrived a bit dry and squeaky out the box. I used a little silicon based lubricant on the plunger and it's great now, nothing but 'pop!'.
