These mallets have a soft felt that's wound rather loosely and does not provide a great fundamental tone from the timpani. While I got use out of some of the other mallets in the JH line through college, these mallets were not good enough to get any real use.
These mallets are not the best rollers for the price, you can get some other timpani mallets for a little cheaper that get the job done a little better. I recommend the vic firth gen2's
I have the reds, hard whites, oversized generals, and these rollers from the Haas line, and I like these the least. I was hoping that there would be a lot of tone without a lot of contact sound, and thats not really case (at least not from the players perspective). If these mallets were a bit fluffier I think they would be awesome. The felt also doesn't seem to be wrapped very tightly.
