Description

Remo's deep shell Irish Bodhrans are 14" in diameter and are designed with a 4.5" deep Acousticon shell. Each drum is fashioned with an internal tuning system and a synthetic Bahia Bass drumhead. The Bahia Bass drumhead produces a soft attack and deep bass tones and is pliable to produce pitch bending notes. Remo's Irish Bodhran's include a hex tuning key and are called the Valencia series. The Bodhran is the historic drum of Ireland and is the primary rhythmic accompaniment for the folk music of the Emerald Isle. The Bodhran's are typically low pitched and is played with a double headed wooden mallet called a tipper, or beater.

I am a flutist, who among other things, specializes in Irish music. My only real percussion experience is playing the bodhran, and I own a lovely high end drum with a natural skin. When I started an Irish group at the University of South Alabama, where I am the flute prof., I needed a drum other than mine that the students could learn on and take home to practice. I have been really pleased with this. The synthetic skin reacts a lot like the real goat and it has been a hit with the students. And I like the fact that it is relatively indestructible. One tiny quibble, when I got it the rubber mount for the tuning wrench inside the drum had become unglued in shipping, but an application of some better quality glue took care of that. Excellent purchase!
