Description

Eric Sammut's arrangement for solo marimba of the "Aubade" from Serge Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet can be heard on his album entitled Four-Mallet Ballet.

"At the end of 1934 Prokofiev received a commission from the Kirov Theater to compose a ballet in the Russian tradition. Excited by this project, Prokofiev finished Romeo and Juliet in six months. I chose two contrasting excerpts from the ballet. "Aubade", meaning in the spirit of a serenade, is scored for mandolins and the orchestra playing in a very high tessitura. In "Dance of the Knights", Prokofiev presents an inventive melody in contrasting orchestral textures characterized by both power and tenderness." - Eric Sammut (from the liner notes of Four-Mallet Ballet)

Difficulty - Medium-advanced
Instrumentation - Solo Marimba (4 mallets, 5.0 octave)
