Afterlife is a large work by Stuart Saunders Smith for mallet instrument quintet, drone unit consisting of marimba, timpani and unpitched percussion (low drums with 4 or more ringing metal instruments), violin, six or more voices, and narrator. These elements function in an independent but coordinated manner. A score for the mallet quintet and parts for the violin, chorus and text are provided while the drone instruments are not notated.
