Description
Christopher Swist's Percussion Quartet No. 1 was composed in 2005 for the West Point Pecussion Group. Swist says this about his composition -
"Percussion Quartet No 1 illustrates my recent departure from "Program" music. Recently, I seem to have been drawn to composing purely abstract works. In spite of writing percussion music for well over 15 years, I had not completed or even attempted a piece for percussion ensemble. In a way, I felt like 19th-century composers must have felt when attempting symphonies or string quartets. Those composers had to deal with the legacy of what Beethoven had achieved. Well clearly, our "Beethoven" is the mountain of masterworks from 1927-1943 (Antheil, Varese, Cowell, Cage, Harrison and Roldan). From a compositional perspective, my solution in writing a percussion quartet was to incorporate some of the ideas from these great innovators into my new piece (the structuralism, the percussive textures, the Gamelan influence). At the same time I incorporated some of my own ideas of pitch structure and use of technology. The players who premiered the quartet at West Point were Craig Bitterman, William Calohan, Eric Garcia, and Rone Sparrow. The international premier was performed by Grupo PIAP in Campos do Jordao, Brazil on July 10, 2008."
