Description

The King of Kings' White Horse by William H. Messerschmidt is a snare drum solo that was inspired by imagery found in Chapter 19 of St. John's Revelation. This solo seeks to depict the conflict between good and evil and the consequent triumph of the good. Consisting of an introduction, exposition, two-section development, and recapitulation, the piece utilizes the development and interplay of numerological motifs - manifested in particular rhythmic configurations, in a traditional American Rudimental Style. Specifically, rhythmic groupings of six (representing man and imperfection) and 666 (suggesting the evil, beastly world ruler) contrast with rhythmic groupings of three (representing the Deity, or Trinity) seven (spiritual perfection and rest) ten (Divine perfection, completion), and twelve (twelve Apostles, twelve tribes of Israel).
