Description
Trinity by Alan Keown for percussion ensemble. This nine person piece begins with "Birth, a crystal clear night;" sparkly sounds depict the calmness of the moment, also apparent in a melodic quote of "The Doxology" which appears throughout the piece. Next comes "Childhood," a happy playful section representing the innocence of most every child. Following "Childhood" is "Adult Life," a more serious, pondering section, presented with an ostinato in the tom-toms and solo passages for snare drum and high toms. The snare drum cadenza represents "declaration of the heavens" followed by the timpani cadenza. This juxtaposition is meant to be a good vs evil dialogue.
The latter portion of Jesus's life is played out with sections entitled "Turmoil," "The Walk up Skull Hill" and "Crucifixion." During the Crucifixion the anvils represent hammer and nails, and the tom-toms portray the fading heartbeat. The final section is "Resurrection" - the sounds of the opening return; three massive chime notes signify the three days in the tomb, followed by storms and the joyous celebratory ending.
